The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is showcasing a new work of art by the contemporary artist Olafur Eliasson as a part of long-running art car programe sponsored by BMW. His work transforms BMW’s H2R hydrogen-powered race car covering the alternative fuel vehicle in a new crust of steel mesh, mirror-coated stainless steel, and many layers of ice.
Olafur Eliasson has envisaged the BMW’s H2R race car in such a way to spotlight the relation between car design and global warming. The exhibition features the frozen vehicle titled as ‘Your Mobile Expectations: BMW H2R Project’, in its first public and solitary US appearance, in collaboration with the Eliasson survey exhibition.
The frozen vehicle escorted by a short film focusing on a series of workshops related to the project in the artist’s studio is enclosed in a room-size freezer in the museum’s architecture and design gallery.
This endeavor highlights the artist’s experimental approach and constant interest in using art practice as a means of communal act. Hopefully, the effort evokes awareness for consequences of global warming not bare appreciation for this work of art.
