Tarian cloth from UK’s company Amsafe is being seen as a suitable replacement to heavy armor for armored vehicles. The fabric is 50% lighter than aluminum cage armor, and 85% lighter than its steel cage counterparts, and almost equally well effective. It works by creating a cushion between the vehicle’s exterior and armor plating, and triggers explosive devices early and distributes the force from the blast across the armor.
Tarian, which means “shield” in Welsh, is already employed by the UK combat vehicles. Now DARPA is getting 30 of these for $100,000 to test suitability for US vehicles as well. A lighter option could be helpful, until airbags come around.
