Borrowed straight from aeroplanes, comes an Event Data Recorder for your car, which much like the Black Box can record crash information right from airbag performance to the angle of the steering wheel. Such details are recorded with the help of various sensors located in the vehicle. Around ninety percent of all new vehicles use this device but the configuration - hardware, software and file formats - differs with each manufacturer.



To spread this device mainstream, the National Highway traffic Administration will be legislating on a universal EDR format within the next 30 days... for which the Society of Automotive Engineers would become the think-tank.
